The importance of your camera in the aftermath of a car accident

Finding yourself involved in a car accident caused by a negligent driver can understandably be devastating. Not only can an accident lead to serious injuries, but it can also result in damage to your car -- likely your main mode of transportation.

Although a sudden motor vehicle collision in California can leave you feeling bewildered and overwhelmed, it may prove invaluable to your future best interests to take photographs of the scene if possible. Although this may not be high on your list of priorities at the time of the collision, the photos you take could prove useful down the road in the event you decide to seek compensation following the car wreck.

Photograph conditions at the accident scene

Taking photos that provide a general view of the crash scene from various angles may be a helpful starting point when you are ready to snap accident-related pictures. In addition, you may want to take a shot of all of the involved vehicles together. This will give any future viewers a clearer understanding of the cars' positions and angles at the time of the accident.

Taking pictures of traffic lights or traffic signs located at the accident scene may also be beneficial. Likewise, you might want to photograph the weather conditions, particularly if the other driver is blaming the weather for the collision. Snow, rain and clouds may all be worthwhile to photograph before you leave the scene of the wreck.

Photograph items at the crash scene

If you notice any objects that have been damaged as a result of the crash, photographing these items might be a wise move as well. These objects may include damaged guardrails, trees or street signs, for instance.

You may also want to take close-up photos of your car's scratches, broken windows and broken glass. Any interior damage that your car has sustained might be worth photographing as well. Finally, you may want to photograph any injuries you have suffered in the collision.

Your rights following an injury-causing accident

If you have been hurt in an accident resulting from another driver's carelessness, it is within your rights to file a personal injury claim, seeking damages. The photos you take at the scene may help you to more effectively prove your case. A successfully fought claim could result in a monetary damage award that can help you to cover your medical costs and other losses resulting from the unfortunate car wreck.
